Sharing the elephant’s choice: southwest China’s Yunnan promotes travel destinations in New York

2021年7月1日，在中国共产党建党100周年之际，一组来自中国云南的城市形象宣传片集体亮相美国纽约时报广场“中国屏”。

On July 1, the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, southwest China’s Yunnan Province made itself visible in New York by showcasing city promotion videos on the Times Square.

苍山洱海、高黎贡山、独龙江、珠江源、普者黑、抚仙湖、澜沧江、梅里雪山等云南名片惊艳出镜，展现着“彩云之南”的独特人文风貌和厚重历史底蕴。

A string of popular travel destinations in Yunnan including Cangshan Mountains and Erhai Lake are featured in the videos, presenting the province’s unique culture and profound history.

云南地处中国西南边陲，是全中国边境线最长的省份之一，是中国世居少数民族最多、特有民族最多、跨境民族最多的省份，复杂的地形和多样的气候条件造就了丰富的自然资源，被誉为“植物王国”“动物王国”“有色金属王国”。

Yunnan, located in the southwest China, is one of the Chinese provinces with the longest border. It is home to the largest number of native ethnic minorities, endemic ethnic groups and cross-border ethnic groups in China. Complex terrain and diverse climatic conditions have endowed Yunnan with rich natural resources, making Yunnan known as a rich land for plants, animals and nonferrous metals.

近期，原本栖息在云南省西双版纳傣族自治州境内的一群野生亚洲象一路北迁引发全球关注，中国政府与民众携手护象的行动获得世界称赞。

The herd of 14 wandering wild Asian elephants from southern Yunnan's Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture have been in the global spotlight recently. The joint efforts by the local government and people to protect them from harm also gained applause worldwide.

云南省本次亮相“中国屏”的8集城市宣传片分别为：玉溪市“高原水乡，古生物圣地”、怒江州“峡谷怒江”、大理州“风花雪月，自在大理”、文山州“三七之乡，钟秀文山”、曲靖市“珠江源头排名前列市”、保山市“花开高黎贡”、临沧市“大美临沧，香飘八方”和迪庆州“秘境迪庆，日照金山”，从生态建设、经济发展、民族团结等角度生动展示了云南围绕“努力成为民族团结进步示范区、生态文明建设排头兵、面向南亚东南亚辐射中心”三大定位，奋力开创高质量跨越式发展的新局面，也向世界传递了来自“象往之地”的问候。

The promotion videos cover eight destinations, highlighting each region’s unique features. Yuxi is known for its riverside views on the plateau and habitat for ancient species. Nujiang is famous for its valleys and rivers. Dali is a romantic and cozy place while Wenshan is a major growing area for a popular Chinese traditional medicine. Qujing is located at the beginning of the Zhujiang River and Baoshan and Lincang are both paradises of flowers. Diqing boasts impressive views with sunshine-lit snow mountains.They serve to showcase Yunnan’s ecological and economic developments as well as diverse ethnic cultures. Yunnan, known for its harmonious society, ecological progress and strategic location, is making strides towards high-quality development with warm invitations to global visitors.

青山绿水、蓝天净土的云南是中国生物多样性最丰富的省份之一，也是中国重要的生物多样性宝库和西南生态安全屏障。

The green and clean Yunnan is one of the provinces with the richest biodiversity in China, and it is also an important treasure house of China’s biodiversity and an ecological security screen in southwest China.

近年来，云南践行“绿水青山就是金山银山”理念，探索绿色发展之路，联合国《生物多样性公约》第十五次缔约方大会（COP15）将于10月份在云南昆明召开，这对展示中国生物多样性保护成效，宣传中国生态文明建设成就具有重要意义。

Yunnan has been an earnest practitioner of green development. The 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15) will be held in Kunming, capital city of Yunnan in October, which is of great significance to show the effectiveness of biodiversity conservation in China and showcase the country’s achievements of ecological progress.

美国纽约时报广场位于纽约曼哈顿中城北区，素有“世界十字路口”之称，是全球观光客访问纽约的必游之地。2011年8月起，新华通讯社正式运营时报广场2号楼一块面积约240平方米的户外电子大屏，向世界展示中国形象、传递中国声音，并被国内外媒体称为“中国屏”。

The promotion videos are shown on the “China Screen”, a 240-square-meter outdoor electronic screen in Building 2 of Times Square. The screen has been operated by Xinhua News Agency since August 2011 to present the image and voice of China to the world by leveraging Times Square’s global appeal.
